Harley-Davidson LiveWire First Ride

Harley-Davidson’s electrically-powered LiveWire has sent shockwaves throughout the moto industry – and also through the general public. I don’t recall the last time Harley made a bigger splash in traditional media than the news of this electric motorcycle, which I got to ride yesterday on the streets of New York City. The LiveWire impresses even before riding, as Harley engineers have clearly put a lot of effort into making this an e-bike that pleases the eyes. It borrows some elements from H-D’s dirt-track heritage, with a low, flat faux fuel tank and abbreviated tail section. Also low is the seat [...]

Sneak Peek: Robb Talbott’s Moto Museum

Robb Talbott is late. We agreed to meet at the site of his forthcoming motorcycle museum in Carmel Valley, but the guy is nowhere in sight. Just then, a late-model pickup comes rattling up the drive, towing a trailer. On the back is something you just don’t see everyday: a single-cylinder, brakeless, fire-breathing, on/off switch of a motorcycle that looks like it could pitch you into the grandstands faster than you could say “JAP.” The owner, a former European speedway champ, now in his 80s, just gave him the damn thing, along with all his trophies and memorabilia. After all, [...]

The Ninth Annual Quail Motorcycle Gathering

The Quail Motorcycle Gathering on May 6 included more than 350 drool-worthy vintage and custom motorcycles, from Italian tiddlers to full-on race bikes, arrayed on the green grasses of the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California. All this eye candy was fawned over by around 3,000 people – record attendance for the nine-year-old event. It was enough to warm the heart of any gearhead. This year’s Quail centered around one of the most influential bikes in history: the Norton Commando of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Almost every model and color was there, causing a near state [...]

See David Monaghan have the save of the year (so far) on his 2017 BMW S1000RR in the skidmark inducing clip. David goes for a pass at 105 MPH when a car neglects to check its mirrors at the legendary Nurburgring, sending David and his cantaloupe sized jewels off road, narrowly avoiding the guard rails. Good save David, and be safe out there! The event begins at 7:25.

Church Of MO – First Impression: 1997 Suzuki XF650 Freewind

I’ll be honest: I’d never heard of the Suzuki XF650 Freewind before. But as I was digging through the archives, looking for this week’s post, when I came across this beauty I knew it was the one. A Suzuki V-Strom before there ever was one, the 1997 Suzuki XF650 Freewind could easily make the case as being the V-Strom’s predecessor. Off-road-ish styling, psuedo knobby tires, street and dirt intentions – all of those are traits the V-Strom carries. Heck, both even have 650(ish)cc engines! How is it like to ride? Here’s our man Yossef Schvetz with the answer. First Impression: [...]

Church Of MO – Ride Report: 2003 BMW F650CS Scarver

Keeping with the 650-ish psuedo Adventure/Enduro bike theme started last week with the 1997 Suzuki XF650 Freewind, this week brings us the 2003 BMW F650CS Scarver. At the time few would call the Scarver a good-looking motorcycle, and unfortunately, the same is true today. We can thank American David Robb, former head of design for BMW Motorrad. Nonetheless, the F650CS Scarver was a new bike for 2003, shedding much of the off-road capabilities of its F650GS cousin with its 17-inch cast wheels, though the engine remains. How does it stack up? Here’s Yossef Schvetz to tell you… Ride Report: 2003 [...]

2017 Honda CRF250L Rally Review – First Ride

From the song “Little Honda” by the Beach Boys: I’m gonna wake you up early cause I’m gonna take a ride with you. We’re goin’ down to the Honda shop, I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do. Put on a ragged sweatshirt, I’ll take you anywhere you want me to. First gear, it’s all right (Honda, Honda, go faster, faster) Second gear, I’ll lean right (Honda, Honda, go faster, faster) Third gear, hang on tight (Honda, Honda, go faster, faster) Faster, it’s all right. There’s no denying that Honda’s CRF250L dual-sport machine is a hit. The CRF250L’s high-winding engine doesn’t [...]
