Church Of MO – First Impression: 1997 BMW F650

by motorscycle.com
Reading about Tom’s ride aboard the new KTM 1090 Adventure R, and Scott Rousseau’s Taste of Dakar adventure has got us on a big dirtbike kick. This got us looking through the MO archives for old adventure bike stories, and this piece on the 1997 BMW F650 was among the oldest reviews on the subject we could find. Until the F650 came on the scene, BMW had nothing to cater to the newer rider. With its 652cc Single (from Rotax), BMW was hoping to fill that void. How did the bike perform? Here’s Gourd Mounce with his first impressions from [...]

2017 Honda Rebel 500 Review: First Ride

by motorscycle.com
I’m not sure if it’s my naturally rebellious nature, being a man who microwaves his food still in the tupperware and even known to occasionally fill water cups up with soda (that’s right, bitch), that got me the chance to head up to Venice Beach, California, for the launch of the new Honda Rebel 500, but I think it might be because the rest of the Motorcycle.com staff (except Troy) is in the tin-foil reusing, cabbage-scented stage of life. The Rebel was first introduced in 1985 as a way for Honda to target a younger generation, typically new to motorcycles, [...]

MO Tested: Spidi 4Season H2Out Suit Review

by motorscycle.com
Spidi 4Season H2Out Suit Review Touring suits have a difficult job description. Quite simply, they need to protect the rider from both the elements and potential mishaps in a wide variety of weather and riding conditions. If you think that’s a prescription for compromise, you’d be right. However, compromise is not necessarily a bad thing. The essence of a successful compromise is how carefully the sacrifices are made. In the case of the Spidi 4Season H2Out Suit,  the designers made smart choices in crafting this modular riding garment. The most obvious choice made by Spidi was to divide the differing kinds [...]

2017 KTM 1090 Adventure R Review – First Ride

by motorscycle.com
It’s not often a reduction in engine displacement results in a superior motorcycle (bigger is better, right?), but that’s the case with KTM’s new 1090 Adventure R. Gone are the 1190 Adventure and Adventure R models and in their stead a new 1050cc R model that’s smaller in both bore and stroke (103mm/63mm vs. 105mm/69mm) equaling a 145cc reduction in displacement. Whatever the 1090 gives up in power production to the 1190 Adventure R it makes up for in lighter weight and better handling. Using KTM’s claim that the 1090 is 22 pounds lighter than the 1190 (456 pounds dry [...]

Representing seven days of electrifying racing in August at the Buffalo Chip Moto Stampede, the sleek, industrial appearance of the 2017 Harley-Davidson Street Glide strikes a balance of refinement and straight-up rawness. “As an [...]

AltRider Taste Of Dakar Adventure Ride

by motorscycle.com
There I was standing in the middle of nowhere, watching my riding partner, certifiable Glamis Dunes freak Scott Shaffstall, have a blast while skiing one of our shiny Honda Africa Twins in some sand dunes in the middle of nowhere in Southern Nevada during AltRider’s 2017 Taste of Dakar adventure ride. AltRider’s 2017 Taste of Dakar weekend threw every kind of desert terrain imagineable at the 100+ participants who attended. The event is bucket-lister for real adventure-touring enthusiasts. “That looks pretty cool,” I said. “Let me get out my camera, and I’ll shoot some pics of you.” Shaffstall looped around [...]

2017 Ducati Monster 797 Review: First Ride

by motorscycle.com
Hemlines and exhausts go up and down, radiators come and go, but the Monster hasn’t really ever gone out of fashion since it hit the runway, dang, has it really been 23 years ago? 1994 brought us Miguel Galluzzi’s original naked bike, and there’s been a veritable plethora of Monsters over the years ever since. Also Monsterinos, as Ducati likes to call the smaller-displacement ones. 2017 Ducati Monster 797 Preview The new 797 really does pay its respects to the original, right down to the very nice aluminum clasp that holds down the front of its 4.4-gallon steel fuel tank. [...]

2017 Yamaha YZF-R6 Review Video

by motorscycle.com
At long last a “new” 2017 Yamaha YZF-R6 is here! And in case you don’t know already, the rumors are true: Yamaha’s R6 shares the same inline-Four as the last generation R6 – but you know what, who cares? I sure didn’t as I was flogging the R6 near 16,000 revs before tapping the quickshift-enabled shifter to engage the next gear. Yamaha calls the fourth-generation R6 a new bike based on the fact it has traction control, ABS, a revised front end, upgraded brakes, and new bodywork inspired by the R1 which Yamaha says makes the R6 the most aerodynamic [...]

MotoGP 2017 Qatar Results

by motorscycle.com
Movistar Yamaha’s new kid on the block, Maverick Viñales, did to the field of the 2017 Grand Prix of Qatar what he’s done ever since he first placed his bum on the saddle of the YZR-M1 last November. He ended the day at the top of the timesheets, having outdueled factory Ducati #1 Andrea Dovizioso over the last eight laps of the race. In the process, he took the lead in the 2017 championship and initiated what is likely to become known as The Viñales Years. Embed from Getty Images A revelation after his first two years in MotoGP with [...]

2017 Yamaha YZF-R6 Review

by motorscycle.com
Here’s a quick reminder of what was going on in the world in 2006: Dick Cheney, then Vice President of the United States, shot a man in the face. Pluto was demoted from plain ‘ol planet to a dwarf planet. Steve Irwin, everyone’s favorite crocodile hunter, and Don Knotts, everyone’s favorite aloof deputy, both passed away. Oscar-winning actor Mel Gibson was pulled over for a DUI in Los Angeles, where he then went on a full-blown, drunken, anti-semitic rant. Pop icon Britney Spears was on her downward spiral, filing for divorce from the father of her two kids less than [...]
